You Know Spring's Coming When....

...sex is on the mind of every animal on the place.

Mind you, making an exception for the humans, we have but a single set of testicles on the entire place. Those testicles belong to Noah, a 20-year-old stallion whose wonderful progress you can track in my blog. Minimal risks notwithstanding, they will soon be removed. A rescue organization simply cannot have an animal in its midst capable of reproduction.

Yet, despite our nearly "testosterone-free" status, all I see is sex today. It happens every spring.

Buddy the blind horse featured on the jacket of my book, Where the Blind Horse Sings, is a gelding. Yet you'd never have known it today, watching him, stone blind, mounting his female pasturemates Abby and Henny.

Nor would you have guessed that Rudy the steer was a STEER--a neutered bull--and not a cohones-intact bull as he mounted not only his companion Helen, the lovely blind Hereford cow, but also ANDY, the male HORSE.

I walked to the barn laughing, shaking my head, having just witnessed a neutered male cow mounting a neutered male horse. I was stopped in my tracks by Hazel, our 50-pound adolescent female potbelly pig, doing her damndest to "connect," so to speak, with Policeman, our 1,000-pound neutered male farm pig, interested only in sunning himself on a warm spring afternoon.

Aaah, love is in the air....

Linda Stepp:

Hello Kathy,

I am new to your site. My partner gave me "When The Blind Horse Sings" and it so touched my heart. I read your last two blogs about your trip to Zion.

I was horrified to read about the conditions of the horses and mules at Zion. Horrified to hear, but sadly not surprised.

Did you go to the Best Friends Animal Society? It is America's largest no-kill shelter for pets and farm animals, covering 33,000 acres in Kanab, Utah. I wonder if they can do anything about that situation?

We are going there May 6th to volunteer for a few days and also go to Zion.

Is there anything I can do for you or any questions you would like me ask?

I am devoted to animal welfare, unfortunately I don't have much money. I recently became vegetarian mainly due to the conditions these animals endure.

What I do have is time. I became disabled in early 2003 and now receive Social Security Disability and waiting on my work pension.

I am considering moving to Utah to volunteer and be able to foster horses, dogs, cats, etc.

I would love to visit your place sometime. I always have a lot of love to give. Currently we have 2 rescued dogs Lucy a golden retriever/chow and Rock a black Lab, previously beaten by his owner who surrendered him to us.
Also the ruler a rescued short hair cat named Amelia.

Blessings and Love to all there.
